Drupal's handling of audio and video isn't always intuitive. In fact, sometimes it can be down right painful. When a client approached us about needing to convert their entire stock of audio files for use on their new site, we quickly realized that the perfect solution just didn't exist...so we made one.

In conjunction with developer Heshan Wanigasooriya, best known for the Video module, DotConcepts has released a . The new audio conversion module depends on both the CCK and Filefield modules; it also requires either SOX or ffmpeg on your server.

Once installed, scheduled conversion is set up using a cron. Audio files uploaded through filefield will be stored and converted when the cron fires and can then be played through your favorite Drupal capable media player. In addition to the fallback ffmpeg converter, this audio converter also handles the more advanced SOX utility. SOX or ffmpeg executable commands can be customized, giving you complete over your audio output.
